It's 2007, So What?

Happy bloody New Year. It's 2007 now, so what? The only difference between today and any other Monday, was that I was off work and there was an extra episode of "Eastenders" on the tele. At the stroke of midnight, going from December 31st to January 1st, they set off fireworks, here in Britain. They do a big fireworks display in London, on the Thames River. I watched it on the tele. In America, fireworks are associated with summer, with displays on the fourth of July. Here, fireworks are associated with winter, with displays on Guy Fawkes Night in November, and New Year's Eve.
There's nothing special about December 31st or January 1st. They just happened to pick then to measure the year from. They had to pick some point. It could have just as easily been March 31st, or the 15th of September. A year is just another duration. The Earth goes around the sun one more time. No, our lives are not suddenly going to change. I've still got to try and scratch a living out of the dust. I'm speaking figuratively, of course. Every New Year, people tell us that they hope our wishes will come true this new year and each year that goes by, they don't, only on New Year's Eve, most people are too drunk to remember. M1 and the Flower have left the hall light on, again. I'd better go turn it off. Happy New Year, everybody.
